From Mr. Ferguson
Coaching wrestling at the elementary school level never fails to amaze me with its unexpected results. It was especially true this season. Fifteen kids came out for our team this year. We usually have 40-50. Only two sixth graders and two from the fifth grade joined us. The rest were fourth graders. Not a way to field a competitive team, even in a COVID year. Our team went 1-5 in dual matches, often giving up as many as 36 points in forfeits each match. We were 7th in our league in duals going into the tournament.
We took 9 to our league championship tournament Friday. Four made it to the championship final matches and qualified for the CUSD districts championships Saturday. We placed 4th at the league tournament.
The next day, at the Y’s Men’s CUSD District Wrestling Championship Tournament, our four wrestlers won 18 and lost 5 matches. Jonathen Z. (2nd), Gabriella L. (3rd), Ethan S. (3rd), and Julian M. (5th) lead our Warriors to 8th place of 34 Clovis Unified schools, not remarkable unless you know our story.
Thank you to my assistant coach Daniel Durant who believes in the life lessons taught and future opportunities created on the wrestling mat as much as I do. Also, shout-outs go to Mrs. Medrano and Mrs. Zamora who were there to cheer on our team and had drinks and snacks for us.
