Fresno State Peach Blossom Festival
Peach Blossom Festival is an annual fun event sponsored by Fresno State University's Speech and Communication Department. The festival was started over fifty years ago, and was created to help young people learn how important it is to read literature aloud, interpretation, performing before a live audience, and how to be an audience member. Children attend from all areas of the Central Valley. Past festivals have had as many as 6,000 children participate!
Each year six to 10 students from grades K-6 are selected to represent Weldon at the Festival. Students practice ½ hour every day for a period of 4-5 weeks with their advisor. Students learn to memorize a poem or story, giving it their personal interpretation. They create gestures to go with their selection, and practice performing in front of their team mates and Coach until the day before the festival in March. Students have a great time, and form a special bond as performers.
